Hosts and Bots!
Joel Robinson
Joel Hodgson, the creator of MST3K, also served as the host for the show from the KTMA season to show #512. Joel played Joel Robinson, a janitor launched into space and forced to watch cheesy movies simply because his bosses didn't like him. He built three robots: Gypsy, Crow T. Robot, and Tom Servo. Gypsy takes care of the ships higher functions, while Crow and Tom accompany Joel to the theater. Joel managed to escape in a escape pod, which was hidden in a cate of Hamdingers.
Mike Nelson
Mike Nelson was a temp helping to clean out Deep 13 when Joel escaped. He was hit with a clown hammer and shot to the SOL in a rocketship. Crow and Tom prepped him hard fir his first experiment, which was #513, 'The Brain that wouldn't die'. Only it died in the end. Strange indeed. Mike contrasts with Joel by having more of a big brother attitude towards the bots, instead of a fatherlike one.
Cambot
Cambot is the only bot not created by Joel Robinson. He was created by the Mads to monitor Joel. You see the SOL through his eyes (or lens, to be more precise). His appearance has changed many times as the show has gone on.
Gypsy
Gypsy was created by Joel to control the ships higher functions, such as navigation, life support, laundry, computer scans. Since 99% of her brain is devoted to these tasks, she seems slow to catch on to things. In Seasons 5 and 6, Gypsy's tube body served as the Umbilicus, which connected the SOL to Deep 13.
Crow T. Robot
Another one of Joel's creations, Crow helps Joel and later Mike riff the movies they are sent. He is sarcastic and a wisecracker, and devotes most of his freetime to doing really pointless and stupid things (trying to tunnel out of the SOL, His Civil War documentary, his educational program about women...). He also does a half-way decent Lloyd Bridges impersonation.
Tom Servo
The last of Joel's bot creations, Tom Servo is a little more well read and sophisticated than his counterpart Crow. He also has a lower threshold of pain (he cries a lot), and he gets struck with ideas from out of no where (Weather Servo 9, Real Boy Tom Servo, the railings everywhere). He also is known for breaking down in middle of movies.
